Upcoming Race Meetings

MMCC Club Night

Last night I was at the usual MMCC club meeting. Despite being rather tired from the 12th weekend and knowing my Tamiya wasn't in the best of sorts (having not had a chance to do anything to it) I was persuaded to go along anyway.

The short story is... I'm glad that I did! Once again I was in the top qualifying heat and I proceeded to get 2nd fastest qualifier in the first two rounds of qualifying. Third round of qualifying I made a mistake that left me beached on the straight for a little while, but no one beat my 2nd place time.

So I started the A final in 2nd place on the grid behind Andy Murray and followed him round for about 4 minutes and 50 seconds. Admittedly I wasn't very close but he never got too far in front either. Then on the last lap his car starting behaving erratically (due to what we later found out to be a bulkhead screw which had come lose and was catching on the carpet) causing him to get stuck up against a barrier and allowing me past into 1st place just in time to take the win! A reverse of the unfortunate events similar to when my steering fell apart on the Tamiya's debut costing me the win on the last lap.

The evening was good fun and nice and relaxed, so I'm glad I went. Although I'm not sure Andy is so glad he persuaded me to come now... J

Commentary on the 12th Weekend at Maritime

The top finals on Saturday weren't exactly filled with the usual suspects, as a couple of you may have noticed, and the reasons for this weren't 100% clear. But, I believe the main factor was that grip on the whole was a little strange for a lot of people actually.

Few noteworthy points from the Saturday include: Peter Craig making the A final with his lipo powered Serpent link car and also Elliott Harper losing the A final when his cells dumped, apparently a false peak was to blame for that. If anything Saturday's A final was something of an advert for the future of lipo in 12th!

Sunday saw a few more developments: Chris Kerswell built his V-Designs link car overnight and as far as I know ran that all day Sunday. The A final in Sport Mod was visited by yet more lipo runners including Danny Holmes who was running the new Xray link car with Tekin speedo and the new-style GM motor.

My weekend went very well, both Saturday and Sunday. I went to Maritime with the mindset that I simply hadn't enjoyed my 12th season much at all so far, and I was determined that this had to stop. So my only real goal for the weekend was to have a good time. This meant I didn't fuss with tires at all; just ran the slightly different sized, chunked sets I already had all weekend. The shocks felt a little squeltchy, but not un-usable I decided, so they were left as well. I rebuilt the diff on the Sunday morning to make it slightly less grindy and that was the only time I touched the car for maintenance (other than the obligatory once over with a paintbrush after runs).

The end result was a little surprising. The weekend was my best result to date. I qualified 3rd in the C final on the Saturday and finished 2nd. Then I qualified 3rd in the Sport Mod B final on the Sunday and finished 2nd again. Two trophies in as many days. That's what I call a result. Seems focusing on the enjoyment of the weekend and just making sure I kept going round and not hitting anything for 8 minutes was what I really needed to focus on. I'm sure to do much better some more race preparation needs to happen (as it usually does and probably will in future). But for now, I'm savouring the Maritime National as is...

Maritime 12th National Rd 5 Saturday Results

Condensed and easier to read results for Saturday:

Maritime 12th National Rd 5 Lunchtime

Just been out for my first round, car was going surprisingly well, touch of understeer at start of run, but grip came up nicely by the end. But, more interestingly, some more pictures from the pits...

Mark Jordan can now confuse his spur and pinion quite easily... highlighting the trouble with running a speedo without timing advance these days!

New Castle Creations '1 cell' speedo in Ed Clark's car, sans case and fan naturally.

Accompanying Castle Creations software - looks nice and simple, Ed gave me a brief tour.

New GM speedo in Matt White's car (not the new 75 though as it's not out yet)

New GM speedo and motor combo in Matt's car in fact!

New software for the GM too - less confusing? hmmm, jury's out on that one.

V-Design pits in the foreground.

Elliott Harper's pit space.

Olly Jefferies and the Associated pits.

Maritime 12th National Rd 5 AM

We've arrived at the Maritime Raceway. Facilities look amazing, definitely not disappointed - just enjoying a mug of coffee out of a real mug! Good times. Couldn't get in last night so had to set up everything this morning. But, not much to report at the moment, got some pictures of the pits and the track layout below. Heat 2 are just going out for their practice slot now. I'm in Heat 5 at the moment for qualifying so I have a little time before I go out.

Few new products I've seen on display already, including the new GM speedo and software and the Castle Creations speedo as well. Hopefully get some pictures of those on in a bit, and the usual results sheets to follow...

NICS Rd 4

Yesterday was the latest round in the NICS race series run by Ribble Valley RC Car Club. Due to the fact that there's a lack of 'big-race free' weekends currently, the organisers decided to put it on Valentines Day. This did lead to a lower than usual turnout. On the plus side we were done and out of there by about 3pm. On the topic of Valentines Day racing - a special shout out goes to Mr Cottom who is so dedicated to his racing he left his wife in bed to come and join us... despite her non-PG rated attempts to convince him to stay... Andy, you're a fool, and I salute you.

Early on the Sunday morning a new track layout greeted us. Seems the organisers have decided to change the layout at the start of each NICS race to prevent any unfair home advantage for regular club members, and then they run that layout until the next NICS event. Lubbly jubbly.

My day started when I was alerted to the fact my diff felt like goblins had taken the liberty of rebuilding it using sandpaper and grit whilst I slept; naturally a diff rebuild ensued. However, it was one that only ended in a marginally better feeling diff and me wishing I'd not taken the gamble and just flipped the plates after all. Unfortunately I was out of time and practice was calling me.

The car was okay all day if I'm honest, and I think it was me who was more out of it than anything. Although it did feel like (and look like on the bench) that all the racing I've subjected it to with little or no maintenance in the last few weeks was finally taking its toll. 4 weeks and 13 race meetings is about the little Tamiya's limit it seems.

Lack of numbers meant rounds were surprisingly rushed and little time was left for playing with the setup changes I had planned. That and I didn't feel that the car was in any place to be receptive to little setup changes. I did get a chance to play with the stock profiles on my Speed Passion GT2.0 speedo though. Upon first plug in, I discovered I was already running a stock profile - '091110STOCK' which was a kind of pleasant surprise. However, I already had been told this wasn't the crazy one, so loaded up my other stock profile option - '091107STOCK' and geared it down 6 teeth (going from 5.47 to 6.56 FDR)...

Crazy is a good word for this profile, even with the loss of 6 teeth I didn't feel like I'd lost anything significant down the straight (although in hindsight, 6 was probably a touch too cautious) but it felt very aggressive on the infield. Actually, it felt a little weird, in that there was very little control in the bottom end of the throttle range, making it very easy to overshoot corners. That said, after a few laps getting used to it, it was more than controllable and the 'ponies' brought a childish grin to your face whenever you came onto the straight.

I'll confess I went back to my 'slower' stock profile for the finals as I felt it would take a little more practice to get used to, and therefore get the most out of, the '091107STOCK' profile. I would even argue that for a track this size, it's too much... but I have a sneaking suspicion that it would be spot on in a 12th or on the bigger outdoor tracks we have coming up for the 2010 TC Nationals. I look forward to experimenting with it some more in the not too distant future. That said, I was promptly beaten in the finals by our dear Mr Cottom, who's Speed Passion GT2.0 I had kindly switched over to the '091107STOCK' profile.

Here's a couple more pictures of the track and venue, good job on the layout Mr Murray!

No racing at MMCC club meeting for me tonight, I needed a break and so does the car (whilst I sort it out to look all shiny, new and fast again!). Next Friday evening we'll be en route to the Maritime 12th Nationals so RVRCCC club meeting is out also unfortunately.

Next reports will be from Maritime, and I'll be up to my 'live' result posting antics again. So, keep yer blinkers peeled!

RVRCCC Club Night

Just a quick little update. Good fun and fairly chilled evening at Ribble tonight. Came second overall. Car was going well, despite having to re-tighten a screw in my steering rack for the umpteenth time. Its been threadlocked and tightened to within an inch of its alloy life now. If it dares to come out again I might have to really show it who's boss... with a hammer... or something equally menacing to a screw...

Next NICS event this Sunday and I'm planning to try a few setup things out in between rounds. I'd like a little more initial steering from my current setup. I also took delivery of a SpeedPassion LCD Professional Program card yesterday so I'm looking forward to trying out their "stock-spec" software on my GT 2.0 as well at some point during the day. To be honest though, the normal profile seems plenty quick to me, I'm not being destroyed by GMs or Tekins at my locals (although it's always a different ball game at the bigger outdoor tracks) so I'm intrigued to see what a stock profile from the guys at SpeedPassion feels like. I'm expecting great things.

MMCC Club Night

Usual club night frivolities last night. Less rushed at the start, compared to last Monday night, as I had managed to switch motors out at the end of Carpet Masters before packing all my stuff up to be stored and transported by Andy to Morecambe.

Andy and me pitting in the corner

Evening started well with me finally getting my average score high enough to be in the 'top heat' for qualifying which was cool. Qualifying went okay, I wasn't the fastest but I wasn't the slowest in the top heat either. On the whole I was pretty consistent and only made few slight mistakes, but to be in with a chance of FTQ at MMCC you really can't afford to make any.

I qualified 3rd in the A final, one place up from my 4th place in the 'A' for qualifying. I finished where I started again; I might have been able to take 2nd but finals had the inevitable entanglement and this of course slows everyone down a little bit. I was happy with how it all played out though and had an enjoyable evening. Didn't really touch the car much to do a combination of tiredness and helping a friend pit.

Finally got some pictures of the club as well...

Carpet Masters Round 4

I'm going to start this post by confessing I had a really enjoyable race meeting at Carpet Masters yesterday. Hopefully I can make it down there again sometime soon. Unfortunately I didn't do quite as well as I would have liked (I seem to be saying that a lot, perhaps I should up my game or lower my sights!) but I do feel confident my car was quick enough to get into the A final this time. It was only my little mistakes which cost us the glory!

Qualifying went well on the whole, I improved with each round, even if round 3 wasn't a big improvement on round 2. There was considerable umming an erring prior to going whether or not Sorex 28 JBs or Sorex 32s would be the order of the day. I ended up sticking with the trusty 28s in practice and they felt really good with absolutely no signs if griproll (which had been my primary concern) that I decided I'd be a fool to then put something else on for the rest of the day.

If I thought the car had felt good in practice, when the grip had come up and the dust been cleared in time for qualifying 1, the car felt fantastic. It was a joy to drive and as I said - if it wasn't for driver errors A final times were easily do-able. After three rounds of qualifying I had made 5th on the grid in the B final for 10.5 turn 'Super Touring'.

I got a good start off the line in the first final but had to get on the brakes by the first turn in order to avoid ploughing into the cars in front. Unfortunately the car behind me didn't share my courteous sentiment and politely went through us all. The usual 'finals madness' ensued and I honestly have no idea where I was when all was said and done. Nevertheless I settled back into a rhythm and started putting in some good times and managed to pass a couple of cars. Then on about the 25th lap the tape/carpet began to come up on the sweeper at the end of the straight. I was an unlucky casualty - sent tumbling through the air into the brick wall at the side of the hall. My driveshaft was damaged in the accident and I was forced to retire before the end of the race. I also managed to damage the edge of my chassis in the crash! Sad times. Finished last in this round of finals.

2nd round of finals rolled around and I'd fixed the car so was back out for more punishment. Surprise, surprise the typical first corner destruction derby ensued and I think I ended up near enough dead last after all was said and done here. It seems everyone just goes for it in finals with very little consideration for those around them... mind you, your opinion is always skewed isn't it? You're always the innocent victim in it all! Anyway, I ignored the fact I was out of the running and just got my head down to try and put in some decent laps. I made a conscious effort not to push excessively and concentrated on putting in consistent times like I'd been trying for all through qualifying. It must have worked, although I'm not quite sure how as I finished 3rd in this race! J

I think I ended up where I started, 5th in the B final. But I can't confirm for certain as the results aren't up online yet and my final results weren't pegged up with the rest of them when I checked. What I do know is that I was the only one in our little group (Andy Cottom, Andy Murray, Adam Whittam, Stefan Chodzynski and Jonny Robinson) who didn't get a trophy of some description... L

RVRCCC Club Night

A mixed evening last night, it ended well but the process to get there was borderline painful. In the 1st round of qualifying the steering turnbuckle I'd fiddled with during the week came back to haunt me. As soon as I went out I could feel that the front toe out was way off, making the car a bit of a dog to drive. When I came off and fixed I noticed I'd forgotten to adjust the ride height since switching from the Sweeps back to my beloved Sorex 28 JBs.

With all that sorted I went out for the 2nd round of qualifying and it quickly became apparent that the chassis had become tweaked at some point as the car was understeering round right handers and spinning out round left turns. Hustled it round for 5 mins but didn't post a good time at all.

To add insult to injury, 4 laps in the 3rd and final round of qualifying the screw came out my servo and my servo saver fell apart. Ironically it was the final screw in the steering assembly I hadn't threadlocked. I can assure you, none of them are coming out in the immediate future now.

Luckily the race director had noticed what an awful night i was having so he arranged the finals so that I scraped 6th on grid in A final. After driving my first reasonable (but far from perfect) race of the evening I finished second. A lap up on 3rd, but a few seconds behind 1st...

Carpet Masters tomorrow!

Weekly Club Night @ MMCC

Out racing again last night, this time at my other local - Morecambe Model Car Club. I started racing here when I started my undergraduate degree at Lancaster University over 3 years ago, and I'm still racing here now whilst I continue my Masters at the uni. The standard at the club is very high, despite it only being a small regular group, and I very much enjoy my racing here.

Due to a combination of factors, last night started in a rather rushed fashion. I'm currently without a (big) car as I can't get a parking permit for it at the uni. Not that I could really afford the insurance even if I could park it outside... Anyway, as a result I rely on fellow racers for lifts to and from race meetings. Utilising our wonderful public transport network for making my way around everywhere else. Unfortunately carrying all the gear for a bigger race meeting on a bus isn't exactly easy, or arguably even possible, so what has seemed to end up happening is that my stuff is transported around by whoever has a car and will be where I am next racing.

This meant that for this weekend just gone (and next weekend at Carpet Masters actually) I got a lift with all my gear on the Friday night to RVRCCC and then gave everything to Andy Cottom who was doing lifts on Sunday. I then caught the bus to Andy Murray's on Saturday night and was picked up for the meeting from there. When we got back from BIWS I left all my stuff at Andy Murray's, so he could take it with him on Monday night to MMCC. The upshot of this already long and laborious story is that my car was in the same broken state I left it after BIWS. Plus, just for added frantic-ness I had the wrong motor, gearing, roll centres, camber and tires on too. Awesome.

So, I missed Round 1 of qualifying at MMCC and only just got out in time for Round 2 but with no additive on. Essentially Round 3 was the first and last qualifier I got. Despite these far from ideal conditions I managed to put it on P2 in the A final, behind Andy Murray... much to my disgust I hasten to add K

The final began with me somehow ending up two places down the rostrum from where I had stood in qualifying. Everyone's favourite start to a final - you spend the whole race wondering if you're actually on the same track and trying to work out why you can no longer get that corner right. Buzzer sounds and thanks to a (typical) zealous start from P3 I end up in the barrier after the second sweeper... it's barely a corner Mark! At least wait until we get to the first real corner before you tag me... J

I spent the rest of the race in 3rd place much to my disappointment. I caught 2nd place two times, but both times I got near I made a mistake in my attempts to catch and take back the position. I hate that I do that - fall back, settle into a rhythm, start to catch someone, but get near and push only to make a mistake and fall back again. It's definitely something I need to be more concious of in future and stop it.

All in all another fun club night and looking forward to next Monday night. But first, RVRCCC this Friday then Carpet Masters on the Sunday. It's been a good few weeks for racing!

Apologies for the lack of pictures here. I took my camera but the madness of getting the car ready, combined with the fact I then 'tidied' the camera away and forgot about it until the end of the night means it's just a block of text for this post.

Ciao
